Created as part of the defenses of Mobile Bay in the early 1800s, Fort Morgan stood as an important fort and artillery post until after World War II. Today, the community is a top tourism attraction along the Gulf Coast that’s nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and Mobile Bay. Fort Morgan is home to the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, which covers almost 7,000 acres and was set up to be a refuge for migratory birds that travel south in the fall and north in the spring. Also protected at the refuge are endangered species such as loggerhead sea turtles and the Alabama beach mouse. Thanks to the refuge’s extensive trail system, visitors can hike through the area to observe the varieties of wildlife.
